Legionnaires' disease

Legionnaires' disease is a respiratory illness caused by inhaling water droplets in mist or spray contaminated with the legionella bacteria. People who have the illness experience flu-like symptoms -- headaches, muscles pain, chills and high fever. Symptoms may progress to coughing and difficulty breathing. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact their doctor immediately.

Many legionella outbreaks occur in cooling towers and water systems in large buildings, when the bacteria multiplies to dangerous levels. Steps to prevent or eliminate contamination with the bacteria include testing and disinfecting the water systems. Responsible building management can prevent Legionnaires' disease from harming people. The law requires owners to keep their buildings safe.
